It’s officially game week as Michigan State football is set to take on Florida Atlantic in their season opener later this week on Friday.

The first game under Jonathan Smith has been highly anticipated all offseason, and now we finally get to see what his team looks like in a regular season game.

With all of the changes that the program has seen this offseason it’s very difficult to predict how the season could go. But I’m going to do my best and give you my three boldest predictions for Michigan State’s 2024 season.

1. Michigan State starts 4-0

The hype surrounding Michigan State will quickly hit an extreme high if the Spartans somehow found there way to a 4-0 start. On paper this seems very doable as MSU could realistically win all four games, but there are some things about this prediction that make it pretty bold in my eyes.

For starters, Michigan State only has two home games out of their first four which is very rare for a power four program. Usually teams start with a lot of easy home games, but that isn’t the case this season.

Michigan State travels to Maryland in Week 2 and then to Boston College Week 4. I didn’t do the research but there’s a chance they are the only Power Four team in the country with two true road games this early in the season.

Now while it’s very possible Michigan State wins these games, they likely will be small underdogs in both. Can they win each game? Absolutely. But to win two road games as underdogs with a brand new team and coaching staff is very unlikely.

Thankfully for Michigan State they should have no problems in their two home games against Florida Atlantic and Prairie View A&M, but these two road games make me question how possible this is. I think a 3-1 start is most likely, but if Michigan State can start 4-0 then something special might be brewing this season.
