Following one of the most impressive freshman seasons that Michigan State hockey has ever seen, Porter Martone decided to sign an NHL contract with the Philadelphia Flyers, forgoing three years of eligibility and a potential revenge tour in 2026-27 with the Spartans.

It was the right move, however, as the talented freshman from Ontario was one of the best players in college hockey, finishing the season with 50 points which ranks seventh nationally.

Martone did the expected and signed with the Flyers on a three-year entry-level contract.

The move may have been expected, but it was still salt in the wound for Spartan fans who were holding out a slim amount of hope that the freshman sensation would be back to make a push for Hobey Baker and a national title as a sophomore. The only reason there was any salt coming from Michigan State fans is because they felt like Martone was robbed of a national title chance.

Michigan State choked away a 3-1 lead in the third period against Wisconsin to watch their Frozen Four berth go up in flames. Seeing the best player from that No. 1 Spartan team leave for the NHL hurt.

And now he's having a ton of success less than two weeks into his pro career.

Porter Martone is en fuego

There's not a hotter rookie in the NHL right now than Martone just six games into his professional career. He's played in all six games since being signed and he's trying to will the Flyers into the playoffs. Unfortunately for him (and fortunately for many Spartan fans), the Red Wings have accounted for two of the three losses that Martone has experienced so far.

Philadelphia is battling for that last playoff spot and Martone is giving everything he's got to the team that he joined less than two weeks ago and less than three weeks after a heartbreaking NCAA Tournament loss that abruptly ended his collegiate career.

After scoring a goal to go along with an assist against the Red Wings on Thursday night, Martone now has seven points (two goals, five assists) in six games. He's averaging over a point per game which is just an insane pace for a rookie, let alone a guy who's been in the NHL for a handful of days.

And he even got to score a goal in front of his former teammates back "home".

It's going to be really easy to root for Martone, and it's pretty obvious that he's going to have a long, successful NHL career. If he continues this mastery, he's going to be signing a huge deal in three years.
