Players agree that Michigan State is the toughest place to play in the Big Ten

Shocker, I know.

Big Ten Media Days has everyone in a basketball mood this week which has been a nice change of pace from the negativity that has stemmed from a poor season start by Michigan State football.

It almost feels like the early-2000s mindset of “at least we have basketball” when the football team fell short of bowl berths annually. It also feels like the early-2000s again because Tom Izzo has Michigan State playing some elite basketball and he has arguably the best and deepest roster that he’s coached in a decade.

While the hoops program is trending in the right direction again, there has been one constant throughout the years, even when Izzo and the Spartans were having “off-years”: home-court advantage.

The Breslin Center has been one of the toughest places to play in college basketball for decades now and the Izzone has been one of the most intense and hostile student sections. Michigan State is arguably the toughest places to play in the Big Ten, if not the entire country.

And at Thursday’s media days, Big Ten players agreed.

UCLA’s Eric Dailey, Iowa’s Kael Combs, Illinois’ David Mirkovic, Purdue’s CJ Cox, and USC’s Jacob Cofie all picked the Breslin Center as the most hostile road environment in the Big Ten and the only other arenas named in the video were Indiana’s Assembly Hall and Purdue’s Mackey Arena.

So there it is. The top three toughest venues in the Big Ten are: Michigan State then a huge gap and then Indiana and Purdue. Although Jeremy Fears Jr. nor Coen Carr were shown with their picks, I’d guess that they’d both pick Purdue or maybe Wisconsin as a sleeper.

Which venues have given Michigan State trouble over the years?

While every road venue in the Big Ten is incredibly difficult to play in, as Izzo stated at media days, there have been a handful that have stood out as the toughest for the Spartans.

Let’s get this out of the way: Purdue is No. 1.

Michigan State did win at Mackey Arena this past season and it has held its own over the past few years, but it’s been a real house of horrors for the Spartans during the Izzo era. From 2012-2025, it was one of the most unwinnable venues for Michigan State. Just a horrible place to play as an opponent but electric for the home crowd.

Illinois might have to be No. 2 because the Illini have always had an intense home crowd, but Brad Underwood’s resurrection of the program has upped it a couple of levels.

Iowa, Indiana, Wisconsin, Michigan, Maryland, and even more recently Nebraska have all been tougher places to play for Michigan State and there’s essentially a horror story from each one in recent years, starting with that Fran McCaffery game from 2023 (sorry, I had to mention it).

The top two have to be Purdue and Illinois.
