Pat Fitzgerald and Michigan State were hoping for an obstacle-free fall camp and they were almost at the finish line when allegations against transfer offensive lineman Nick Sharpe went public.
Connor Earegood of The Detroit News posted about the Sharpe allegations on Friday, sending the entire fanbase into shock. No one expected to hear about any off-field distractions but the story was presented with both sides having their stories included.
The article received a ton of backlash because Sharpe hasn’t been charged with a crime and this is currently just an accusation, but Earegood did a good job presenting the facts.
He also shared a statement that was provided to The Detroit News after his article went live.

Mike Nichols, who is representing Sharpe, said that he’s confident that his client did nothing wrong and that it was a case of “if it’s too good to be true, it probably is”. He concluded by saying that he’s “fairly confident” that this isn’t going to go anywhere legally.
It’s still a very fresh situation and Bath Township police are still investigating, but Sharpe has not been charged with anything. That’s where the situation stands with the season set to begin on Friday.

No coach likes to hear about his players being involved in off-field or legal issues, but Pat Fitzgerald now has to weather his first storm at Michigan State before his first season even starts.
Now that the allegations have been publicized, Sharpe is going to be under a microscope. The team is also likely going to receive an unnecessary question or two regarding the situation which cannot be commented on because of the ongoing investigation.
Fitzgerald has to keep his guys focused and implement a “not talking to anyone about this” rule which is a necessity because that would only complicate things.
Michigan State opens the season with Toledo on Friday night. Focus will be key.
