Michigan State football has had an up and down first season under head coach Jonathan Smith. Still, the Spartans have had some impact freshman players step up in a huge way nonetheless. One such player is River Rouge's Nick Marsh.

Marsh was a highly-touted prospect coming out of high school, and to this point he hasn't disappointed. He could've gone anywhere, including the likes of Georgia, but he stayed true, and the Spartans are benefitting from it.

Despite an ugly loss against Indiana last weekend, Marsh forever etched his name in Spartan receiving history. After scoring his third touchdown of the season, with an outstanding grab going out of bounds, he officially passed Cody White for the most receiving yards by a freshman in program history.

Marsh sits at 553 receiving yards, which bested White's 490 yards from 2017. Marsh did so in just eight games played this season. Who can forget he missed the Boston College game, which may have been the difference in that one. He's still got plenty more games left to further stamp his name as the best freshman receiver ever at Michigan State.

The 6-foot-3 receiver, has plenty more highlight worthy plays to make. The connection between Marsh and quarterback Aidan Chiles has been spot on despite Chiles' turnover woes.

His efforts haven't gone unnoticed at a national level. Sure, Ohio State has Jeremiah Smith, and Alabama has Ryan Williams, but Pro Football Focus (PFF) recently released the top 10 freshman in the Power Four, and Marsh is right there with those guys.

It will be interesting to see how many yards Marsh can accumulate the rest of this season and beyond. He's clearly on pace to climb the record boards for receiving at Michigan State. He's already recorded more yards in his first season than all-time leading pass-catcher BJ Cunningham.

Marsh is fun to watch and Spartan Nation is lucky to have him.
