A new advantage for Jonathan Smith and Michigan State football has been unlocked.

In preparation for the season opener, Michigan State's defense has had to prepare for the unknown at quarterback, but that actually might not be a bad thing. Western Michigan hadn't named a starter until Tuesday when head coach Lance Taylor spoke to the media.

Taylor admitted that both sophomore Broc Lowry and junior Brady Jones had been close all camp long and neither really separated themselves as the starter. He said that both were so good that he couldn't name a starter.

So basically, Western is heading into the opener without a clear QB1.

Matthew Ehler of MLive reported on Tuesday that Western Michigan planned to play two quarterbacks against Michigan State in the season opener.

The old saying is "when you have two quarterbacks, you have none". If that's truly the case that Taylor is planning on rotating his two quarterbacks, that should become a major advantage for the Spartans' defense as they can continue giving both guys different looks to confuse them. They can also take advantage of the fact that neither has experience.

In fact, Lowry is just 5-for-9 for 29 yards in his career and Jones has yet to complete, or even throw, a pass at the FBS level. Neither quarterback has thrown a touchdown pass and neither has started a game. That plays right into Michigan State's favor.

While a two-quarterback look could confuse teams, this situation is different seeing as neither guy has any experience.

Michigan State should pin its ears back on Friday and make both uncomfortable in the pocket.

I see plenty of turnovers going Michigan State's way.
