Nebraska media spreading blatant lies about Pat Fitzgerald era at Michigan State

Losing to Nebraska on Saturday was a low point early in the Pat Fitzgerald era, but most Michigan State fans realized that this rebuild was going to take some time, especially after what Jonathan Smith and Mel Tucker did to the program.

There’s a new sense of excitement around the football program still. Fitzgerald has endeared himself to the fans because, well, he actually acts like he cares instead of always looking like a deer in headlights.

Fitzgerald has a lot of people bought fully in despite the last two losses and it’s because when he says that he‘s going to fix the program, it’s easy to actually believe him. When Smith said it, it was like he didn’t even believe his own words. He was always “aw shucks” after a loss while Fitzgerald is fired up and “p*ssed off”.

Fans are still behind him even if the second half of Saturday’s game against Nebraska was a disaster in terms of on-field play, officiating, and fan (mostly student) attendance.

At kickoff, Spartan Stadium was buzzing, but after falling behind 24-10 at the half with Nebraska set to get the ball to start the second half, the crowd dispersed at an alarming rate. Members of the Nebraska media took note of it and decided to use that second-half attendance as an overall review of the Fitzgerald era in East Lansing, spreading blatant lie after blatant lie on a recent radio show.

Not only did these members of the Nebraska media lie about there being “not a lot of excitement about the Pat Fitzgerald tenure” which is obviously false, but they claimed that Spartan Stadium was piping in crowd noise in the second half to make it seem more full. With the sound system that Spartan Stadium has, everyone who’s attended a game knows that’s just not true.

Listening to a group of media members not realize that it was “dead” and no Spartan fans were cheering but only Nebraska fans were because the game was out of hand is really something.

”I don’t get it, Nebraska was up by three scores and zero bounces went MSU’s way and they weren’t cheering” is basically what they’re saying while accusing fans of not being excited about Fitzgerald and the stadium piped in crowd noise, apparently.

There’s no excuse for the poor attendance in the second half and just lack of energy in Spartan Stadium after the Cornhuskers went up by two scores, but there’s cautious optimism in East Lansing and everyone is backing Fitzgerald because he actually cares.

It’s time for the fans to show they care or opposing teams are going to continue to spread these fake narratives.

Second-half crowd has been a problem at Michigan State

While the Nebraska radio show did say a lot of incorrect things about the Fitzgerald era, it was correct in stating that the atmosphere could be better. There’s just no reason a proud program like Michigan State should see tens of thousands of open seats in the second half of a Big Ten game in September. No excuse for that.

This is not a new problem, however.

Michigan State has had a second-half crowd issue (especially in that student section) for years now. Granted, there hasn’t been a ton to cheer about over the past five years and going to Rick’s at halftime might seem like a way better idea than watching a loss in person, but things will never get better if there’s no in-person fan support.

Fitzgerald asked the crowd to show up and be loud and they did for a half and many of the students decided to hit the bars and just coughed up a two-touchdown game as a loss.

Winning cures all, so Fitzgerald can get this ship righted and that’ll start this week by going on the road to beat Wisconsin. Win that game and watch the crowd show up in droves for homecoming.
