NCAA releases statement that Jaxon Kohler, Tre Holloman aren’t going to like

The NCAA released an important statement on Thursday that a couple of former Michigan State players are not going to like very much.

Tre Holloman and Jaxon Kohler have been hoping to get a fifth year of eligibility granted to them after filing injunctions in several different states. Fans were hoping that at least one of them would return to East Lansing for a fifth year and the overwhelming choice was Kohler. A lot of Spartan fans are still holding a grudge against Holloman so they’d rather him go elsewhere if granted a fifth year.

Unfortunately, both got some bad news on Thursday.

The NCAA released a statement that it doesn’t have any plans to grandfather in seniors to the new age-based eligibility model which would effectively end the careers of Kohler and Holloman.

Obviously things can change and just because they make this statement in July doesn’t mean that they’re going to be able to hold out against every fifth year applicant.

I’m sure Holloman and Kohler will have their lawyers putting in a little extra work to see if this is still going to be possible but they can’t put their entire lives on hold while they wait. Both are still going to be seeking out a G-League contract while they wait.

If the NCAA remains firm on this and doesn’t grant eligibility to any of these players who are trying to get that fifth year, Kohler and Holloman’s college careers will officially come to an end.

Would Michigan State take either one for a fifth year?

Tom Izzo is a forgiving man, but I doubt he’s willing to push to get Holloman back considering the subtle shot that he took at his former coach after his first breakout game at NC State.

So for that reason, and the fact that Michigan State is going to be pretty guard-heavy, I don’t believe that Holloman was ever a realistic option. He may want another year and he lives in Lansing and calls Michigan State home, but I don’t think it’ll be with the Spartans.

As for Kohler, I think there’s more of a chance of that happening. He left on good terms after grinding out a good four years and he left on a high note, too. Kohler had his best season as a Spartan during his senior year and he did miss part of his sophomore year so he has a case for a fifth year. Kohler is more likely to be back.

The post does have its share of depth, but this team would definitely benefit from Kohler back at the four next to Anton Bonke.

But I doubt either scenario is all that likely.
