Michigan State is getting set to face Gonzaga in a few months, but Mark Few and the Bulldogs have been at the center of some really unfortunate roster luck this offseason.
While I could still see Gonzaga being a top 25 team by the time they face the Spartans in December, the Bulldogs are going to have to get there by defying the odds.
What do I mean by this? Well, everyone seems to be jumping off the Gonzaga bandwagon after the Bulldogs have lost not one, but two guards in shocking manner this offseason.
The first was incoming combo guard Jack Kayil who was committed to Gonzaga in the 2026 class as a four-star combo guard before opting to stay in the 2026 NBA Draft and getting selected in round two.
The next was even more shocking as the Bulldogs lost their starting point guard suddenly.
According to several reports, Gonzaga lost its projected starting point guard for the upcoming season as Mario Saint-Supery decided to head back to Spain to play, leaving Few and the rest of the Bulldogs in shock with just a few months left until the season is set to begin. He averaged 8.6 points and 3.8 assists and shot 40.3% from three in 23 minutes per game as a freshman in 2025-26.
Michigan State’s scouting report on the Zags will change quite a bit over the coming months.
Michigan State’s matchup with Gonzaga will still be tough
Although Gonzaga is losing its projected starting point guard, Few has been one of the best recruiters at the mid-major level for decades now and he’s got guys willing to step up.
While the move was shocking, there are going to be some last-minute options for the Bulldogs, and one just opened up this week as former UCLA point guard Donovan Dent revealed that he’d be filing a waiver to get a fifth year just months after announcing his retirement from basketball.
Could this mean that Few got on the phone and made the call to Dent to save him from what could be a disaster of a season without a starting point guard? I wouldn’t be shocked.
If Dent does return to college after being granted a fifth year, that would make this Michigan State matchup even tougher than originally expected because the Spartans struggled to contain him during the Big Ten Tournament when he scored 23 points in an upset win.
No matter what route Few decides to go with his point guard position, whether he targets a guy like Dent or relies on his current roster, the Bulldogs are still going to be a tough out.
