Football isn’t going very well for the Spartans so it’s time everyone turns their full attention (or at least most of it) toward basketball. That makes Sunday’s Michigan State vs Marquette game an almost perfect watch after the eye broccoli that was Saturday’s football game against UCLA.
The Spartans will take the floor again for the second time this week in exhibition play, but this time they’ll be on the road against a much-improved Marquette team.
Michigan State has been chomping at the bit to bounce back from Tuesday’s loss to No. 4 UConn at home. It was a poor performance overall by the Spartans as they lost 78-70 and were playing from behind for 39-of-40 minutes. Tom Izzo got to watch the film, the team got back to work this week to work on its weaknesses, and now they’re ready to face another tough opponent.
Shaka Smart and Marquette will be the perfect final test for Michigan State before the season officially starts. The Golden Eagles were a disappointing 12-20 last season but they’re expected to be a tournament-caliber team this season. Smart is too good of a coach to continue to struggle.
Although this won’t count in the win-loss column, this is Michigan State’s first trip to Marquette in 70 years.
How to watch Michigan State vs Marquette
This will be a nice palate cleanser after Michigan State’s loss to UCLA on Saturday.
Date: Sunday, Oct. 25
Time: 1 p.m. ET
Location: Marquette, Wisconsin.
Venue: Fiserv Forum
Live stream: YouTube
The game will be broadcast on YouTube on Sunday afternoon from Milwaukee so it looks like everyone who has access to the internet will be able to watch and no subscriptions are needed. I say that until we get bamboozled by a “buy now to watch” pop-up when the game tips off.
Michigan State could be short-handed if Izzo decides to play it safe with Jeremy Fears Jr. and keep him sidelined while he recovers from a scary fall against UConn.
If Fears isn’t able to go (he expects to play), he’ll give way to true freshman point guard Carlos Medlock Jr. and his backup at the point will be Jordan Scott. In an emergency, we could see Jasiah Jervis out there, but I’d be somewhat surprised if Fears isn’t suited up.
Hopefully the Spartans can prove that Tuesday’s game was an outlier and they can snap right back into the hot shooting we saw from them against Incarnate Word.
My guess is that we’ll see something in between those two games.
Michigan State needs to show us something.
