Almost exactly a month ago, Tom Izzo and Michigan State offered top-30 small forward Asa Monthomery from Powder Springs, Ga., which felt like a huge move considering the Hall of Fame head coach doesn't usually offer guys who he doesn't feel like he has a good shot with.
This also isn't like football where coaches are sending out over 100 offers every cycle. Izzo keeps his offers to a minimum and is very selective, weighing his chances coupled with the fit.
Montgomery was also being pursued by some of the biggest names in college basketball at the time of the offer like Arizona, Kentucky, UConn, Louisville, North Carolina, Florida, Houston, Alabama, and Texas Tech, among others. He was also offered by Duke and Michigan just a few weeks after receiving a scholarship offer from Izzo and the Spartans.
Well, Izzo might have gotten some bad intel -- or maybe there's still a trick up his sleeve -- because Montgomery announced his official visit schedule for the fall, and Michigan State isn't getting one.

According to the latest report, Montgomery is set to visit LSU, Florida, UConn, Providence, North Carolina, Arizona, and Louisville this fall from Aug. 28 through the weekend of Oct. 30.
The biggest weekends that fans probably would have hoped for a visit from Montgomery were Grind Week and Michigan State Madness which is usually around the first week of October which are already taken by UConn and Duke, respectively.
It might be back to the drawing board for Izzo at the small forward spot.
This may not be the end for Michigan State with the 4-star SF
This might not mean that it's over for the Spartans with Montgomery because these are just the announced visits, but there are still slots open on that fall slate for Michigan State to earn one. Obviously the ideal Grind Week visit looks to be off the table thanks to Montgomery's UConn visit, but there's an open weekend for Oct. 9 which is Michigan State's Homecoming weekend and the football team hosts Illinois. That would be a huge move for Spartans if they were to secure a visit that weekend.
Unfortunately, this feels like a recruitment where holding your breath may not be the best idea. He's being pursued by some of the biggest names in college basketball. Izzo can spend his time more wisely on guys like Antonio Pemberton, Joshua Tyson, Jaxson Davis, and the trio of centers that he's offered.
Montgomery felt like a long-shot from the get-go, but now we can (probably) move on from this recruitment, barring a surprise visit.
