Right when it seemed like Michigan State was avoiding the serious injury bug, a game like Nebraska happened and it wiped out what felt like dozens of players which dug deep into the depth.
Before the season, Jordan Hall was raving about how fresh he felt and how the new coaching staff was making sure no one got injured and managed practice and conditioning really well. Unfortunately, he may have jinxed himself because he’s been one of the most injured players on the team this year. Yes, that’s actually measurable because he’s left each game he’s played in with an injury and he even missed the Eastern Michigan matchup.
Hall isn’t the only one who’s been bit hard by the injury bug. In fact there are now up to seven Spartans officially ruled out for Saturday’s game at Wisconsin.
If you’re headed to Madison or were banking on a signature Pat Fitzgerald upset at Wisconsin to really get the team back on track, you may want to avert your eyes for a second.

That’s three (!!) cornerbacks who are ruled out in NiJhay Burt, Keshawn Williams, and Tyran Chappell and one who’s questionable (Tre Bell), four linebackers who are either doubtful (Hall) or questionable (Cam Stodghill, Dion Crawford, Brady Pretzlaff), and a key offensive lineman (Conner Moore) who may not suit up for those of you counting at home.
Why can’t we have nice things?
Injuries are inevitable in East Lansing, but no one could have imagined that they would hit this hard and this fast. A modest injury report last week has ballooned into seven players out (one for the season), one doubtful, and seven more questionable. A total of 15 players are on the initial injury report because of course.
Should Michigan State kiss those “upset” hopes goodbye?
Obviously no one is going to wave the white flag and Fitzgerald is a proud coach who will always believe that his team can win any game, but this feels like an insurmountable number of key players who could potentially be sidelined.
Cam Edwards, Hall, Bell, Crawford, Pretzlaff, and Moore have all taken starting snaps this season but now there’s a good chance that all of them miss a key Big Ten road battle in Madison.
The defense has gotten better, but there’s just not enough depth on this team to sustain four cornerbacks and four linebackers potentially being ruled out.
The one positive is that Hall is “doubtful” instead of “out” on Saturday which means that whatever injury he did sustain isn’t season-ending. That’s always the first fear that Michigan State fans have to face when a star player goes down with an injury and gets carted off. Look what happened with Edwards.
