Wednesday has been transfer portal day for Michigan State football as the Spartans have hit double-digit departures.

The Spartans have lost some potential starters like Chrishon McCray, Jalen Thompson, and Kristian Phillips. They’ve also lost some depth pieces like Evan Boyd, Cole Dellinger, and Ryland Jessee, but a couple of position groups have been hit hard this offseason.

Michigan State’s receiver room and tight end room have both been hit hard.

The Spartans have lost three solid wideouts and they’re now down two tight ends. On Wednesday, redshirt freshman Wyatt Hook announced that he’d be entering the transfer portal when it opens in a couple of days.

Hook redshirted as a true freshman under Jonathan Smith in 2024 and didn’t catch a pass in 2024. He hadn’t cracked the tight end rotation in two seasons, so his decision to transfer isn’t all that surprising.

With this departure, Hook becomes the second tight end to enter the transfer portal, following Masunas last week. Hook isn’t as valuable as Masunas, but the depth has taken a hit, especially when you remember that Jack Velling is graduating.

The tight end room, like the receiver room, is looking bare and inexperienced.

Who does Michigan State have left at tight end?

Losing Masunas hurt, and then Hook delivered more bad news even though he likely would’ve had a chance to fight for snaps with Velling also gone.

So who’s left at tight end for Michigan State?

The early favorite to start has to be Jayden Savoury who ended up redshirting this season after being the subject of a ton of praise from Smith and Brian Wozniak in the preseason. Brennan Parachek is still on the roster so he, too, will be fighting for the starting job in 2026, barring a last-second transfer.

Joey Caudill and Eddie Whiting are two promising tight ends coming in with the 2026 class, and many expect them to have an early impact. They’re going to have to now with Masunas, Velling, and Hook gone.

Savoury and Parachek are starting options, but Kai Rios caught a touchdown pass this season so he can’t be counted out in the rotation either.

Not much experience, but you have to trust the staff to figure it out.
