Less than 24 hours separate us from the start of Michigan State football and a lot of Spartan fans are growing uneasy simply because Toledo has been a popular upset pick and we all watched as Rutgers got mollywhopped at home by UMass on Thursday night.
Those two combined don’t exactly ease the tension heading into Friday’s game.
But a new Michigan State football trailer might help.
The creative team has been killing it this offseason and they’re not stopping there. They released an incredible trailer for Game 1 against Toledo and it’s probably going to make you run through a wall.
It’s also narrated by Spartan legend Ken Mannie who served Michigan State’s strength and conditioning coach for 25 years, including throughout the Mark Dantonio era. Suffice it to say, this is an incredible watch.

That was probably the best minute of everyone’s day with the anticipation of kickoff running rampant. East Lansing is ready to explode now that there’s a new era of football and some palpable excitement for the future for the first time in 4-5 years.
Mannie was a great pick to read the Game 1 trailer and hopefully this becomes a weekly thing with a new narrator each time. Before the Michigan game, it’d be cool to see someone like Coach D or Kirk Cousins or even Connor Cook preview it on that trailer. Not sure that I remember the weekly trailers being a thing during the Jonathan Smith or Mel Tucker eras, but this stands out. There’s just a new feeling about this new era of Spartan football.
We’ll see if that translates into wins.
We’ll get a good feel for the Pat Fitzgerald era within a few snaps
While this does feel the start of a successful era, there was also a hint of excitement back when Smith was hired but that was washed away somewhat quickly with a clunker against FAU in the opener. It felt like Michigan State would be inconsistent and play down to opponents during the Smith era after that opener, and that’s exactly how it played out.
Even when Tucker was hired, there was excitement and it was contained, but it was still present despite Dantonio’s abrupt retirement. His first game was absolutely chaotic as the Spartans lost to Rutgers during the COVID season and look how his tenure played out: completely chaotic.
If this trend continues, we’ll see within the first few snaps how the Pat Fitzgerald era could go. If we see a tougher, more disciplined team that doesn’t make a ton of mistakes but might not have the most talent yet, we could probably expect a toug, disciplined team as long as he’s in charge.
Kickoff needs to get here before I talk myself into a 10-win season.
