The transfer portal has been the topic of discussion for the past week and that’s because Michigan State needs a starting center and potential targets are becoming available every day.
Tom Izzo is feeling the pressure a little bit to add an elite center from the portal that complements the projected starting lineup. The Spartans are set from 1-4, for the most part, but a center is all that’s really missing, and with some big names hitting the portal, it’s time for Izzo to take some big swings in order to push for that elusive second national title.
Aiden Sherrell would constitute as a big swing for Izzo and the Spartans, and it sounds like Michigan State is zeroing in on that top center transfer from Alabama.
According to a report from Spartans Illustrated, Sherrell is “close to being locked in” for a Michigan State visit after taking a trip this past weekend to Indiana without committing — at least not yet. A lot could change in the next 24 hours, but it sounds like Michigan State will get a visit from a priority transfer.
Sources tell Spartans Illustrated that an MSU visit from portal target Aiden Sherrell is "close to being locked in." The obvious caveat that things are constantly evolving this time of year must be added here - but, from all indications, it seems like a visit is likely.

Not only is this an important development for the 2026-27 roster, but it shows that Izzo is willing to play with the big dogs for some of the top targets in the country. He’s likely to get a visit from the No. 10 overall transfer in the portal and he’s in good shape with him, and the Hall of Fame head coach is also on a list of schools being considered by the No. 11 overall transfer.
This is what “die trying” looks like.
A lot could happen for Michigan State over the next 24 hours
If Sherrell leaves Bloomington without committing to Darian DeVries and the Hoosiers, that means Michigan State will likely lock in a visit with Sherrell in the coming days — I’d assume it would be announced within the next 24 hours.
If Sherrell remains uncommitted on Monday night, I like Michigan State’s chances to lock in a visit and get him to campus. Many believe that if he comes to East Lansing, he’s not leaving without committing.
Moustapha Thiam of Cincinnati is another name to keep an eye on. He’s visiting St. John’s this week and he’ll probably plan others, but if Sherrell does commit to Indiana, I’d expect Michigan State to push hard for him. He might have an even higher ceiling than Sherrell, but I don’t think you can go wrong with either one.
We’re going to have a lot more clarity on this situation within the next 24 hours.
