Michigan State is officially on commit watch after 5-star PG sets decision date

Folks, we have our first commit watch of the 2027 recruiting class as Michigan State is closer than ever to landing its first pledge in the cycle.

Tom Izzo just had his biggest recruiting weekend of the year as he hosted four-star center Jaydn Jenkins and five-star point guard Antonio Pemberton for Grind Week. It also happened to be the weekend of the second home football game of the season so Izzo was able to double-dip with activities.

Campus was buzzing all weekend with former Spartan basketball players back for Grind Week and the football team looking to improve to 2-0 with Noah Kim coming back to East Lansing for the first time since transferring.

And the effects of that elite weekend for recruiting are already being felt.

Izzo and the Spartans were reported as new leaders for Pemberton and it looks like they're officially on commit watch as the five-star point guard from Massachusetts just announced his decision date which will take place just days after visiting Michigan State.

Pemberton is atop many Michigan State fans' wish lists for the 2027 class and if he's the first player to commit to Izzo and the Spartans, that could set off a domino effect. Maybe he could get Jenkins to join him in East Lansing after visiting at the same time and developing a rapport.

The Spartans are probably looking for something in the range of a three-man class and Pemberton would be a fantastic first get.

The Massachusetts native is ranked the No. 20 recruit in the class by 247Sports as well as the nation's fifth-best point guard.

Antonio Pemberton could join a lineage of elite MSU point guards

Guys, Grind Week might just be undefeated. It helped the Spartans land Jasiah Jervis last year and Jase Richardson the year before. Now there's a very good chance that Pemberton joins the green and white just days after taking in his first Grind Week as a recruit.

Izzo knows what he's doing.

Pemberton could also join what can be considered an elite lineage of great Michigan State point guards under Izzo, dating back to Mateen Cleaves. Heck, even before Izzo, Scott Skiles and Magic Johnson were two of the best point guards to ever play in the Big Ten -- the latter is the best college basketball point guard of all time.

And Pemberton could join that lineage on Sept. 18 when he announces his commitment.

Think of all the great point guards who have suited up for Izzo. Cleaves, Drew Neitzel, Kalin Lucas (recent MSU Hall of Fame inductee), Cassius Winston, Jeremy Fears, and soon to join the list is Carlos Medlock Jr who, by all accounts, looks like a future star in East Lansing.

Going from Fears to Medlock to Pemberton is just not fair. Izzo gets the point guards he wants and the rest of college basketball just has to sit there and watch him do it.

Izzo might be 71 years old, but he still throws a wicked fastball.
