Michigan State may be just 2-4 this season, but that’s not stopping Pat Fitzgerald from pursuing his former No. 1 target in the 2027 class who committed to Texas Tech over the summer.

Gideon Gash, the No. 58 recruit in the country, has visited Michigan State already this season despite being committed to Texas Tech, but the Spartans were always going to have a fighting chance as long as Samson Gash is in East Lansing. His oldest brother, Caleb Gash, is also on the team, but there was talk of Samson and Gideon being a package deal as siblings separated by just a year.

Samson was one of the top receivers in the 2026 class but he’s been buried on the depth chart behind several veteran wideouts and transfers as a true freshman. He has, however, gotten a chance to play on special teams mostly and he came up with a huge play (that was controversially overturned) in front of his brothers.

Yes, his younger brother was also at the game as Michigan State continues to inch closer and closer to flipping the talented athlete recruit from Detroit Catholic Central.

Gideon visited Michigan State this past weekend with his Catholic Central teammates.

A team trip probably changed the visit a little bit from what he’s used to, but it could have also been a planned trip and his team was also invited along. It would make a ton of sense for Fitzgerald to develop a pipeline at Catholic Central considering it’s one of the best high school programs in the state and it constantly produces Division 1 talent.

This is also a classic recruiting tactic to get Gash closer to flipping his commitment by also hosting his teammates and pursuing some of them.

I’m not saying that this visit is going to change the trajectory of his recruitment with the Spartans but getting him to visit once again this season (second time in six weeks) is a good sign for MSU.

Pat Fitzgerald’s culture shift is being felt

A year or two ago when Michigan State was struggling on the field, it felt like there was no juice to the recruiting side of things. There were no surprise flips to keep an eye on nor really any late-season recruiting wins of note which was kind of indicative of the culture within the Michigan State football program becoming a little stale.

It’s gotten quite the facelift under Fitzgerald’s watch, however.

Fitzgerald is bringing back a culture of accountability, toughness, and (eventually) winning that’s been missing for about six years now. There was one exception in 2021, but outside of that Peach Bowl season, it’s been all downhill since Mark Dantonio retired — and really also in his final two years.

The culture is shifting back to what it looked like during the glory days of Dantonio and we’re starting to see recruits buying into the vision and giving Fitzgerald the benefit of the doubt regarding this rebuilding year.
