Injuries were an unfortunate recurring theme throughout the Mel Tucker and Jonathan Smith eras, and it’s unfortunately looking like it’s carrying right over into the Pat Fitzgerald era.
Although the Spartans were fairly healthy throughout the preseason and have only had a couple of key players miss games this season, they lost a big piece to the puzzle on Saturday evening in the first quarter against Nebraska.
Cam Edwards was tackled after a big gain that put Michigan State in field goal position and inevitably led to three points, but when the defender took him down, he went low and took out his leg.
The tackle looked awkward and Edwards immediately grabbed his leg.
After spending some time on the ground, he was helped off the field and into the medical tent where the staff brought out a cart to take him into the locker room.

It looked like a tough hit and his leg bent a little bit, but everyone was optimistic that he’d return seeing as he’d gone down with minor injuries in almost every game to begin the year.
The cart squashed that optimism.
Edwards was visibly frustrated as he was being carted into the locker room which is never a good sign because that usually indicates a serious injury. We won’t speculate, but it’s safe to say that Edwards is questionable, at best, to return to the Nebraska game.
Let’s just hope this isn’t a serious season-ending injury because that would hurt the offense big time.
Michigan State can’t afford to lose Cam Edwards
Michigan State’s offense was already struggling to move the ball against Northwestern but the departure of Edwards is sure to hurt that side of the ball even more.
He’s the best offensive weapon that Michigan State has and with the line really struggling to protect Alessio Milivojevic and no chunk plays to be seen on the ground, the offense is going to take a step back as long as Edwards is sidelined.
That means that Jaz Patterson and Marvis Parrish are going to have to step up in Edwards’ place, and we might even see some Brandon Tullis.
Fingers crossed that this isn’t as serious as it looked.
