Following a last-second upset loss to Cornell in last year's NCAA Tournament, it felt like Michigan State hockey would never win another national title.
The Spartans had just locked up another Big Ten regular-season title (their second straight) and looked like arguably the best team in the country. Many believed the Spartans were about to make a run to the Frozen Four, avenging the previous season's NCAA Tournament loss to Michigan.
Unfortunately, Adam Nightingale's team just didn't have the juice against Cornell, surrendering an early lead to lose with 10 seconds left on a power-play goal.
The good thing about last season, though, is the fact that it's in the past. Michigan State can move forward and forget about Cornell. Nightingale has compiled a roster that should be able to compete for another Big Ten title and potentially a national championship, but the 2025-26 regular season is going to be critical with Penn State getting even better.
Practice began this week, and the preseason Big Ten coaches poll was revealed, naming Michigan State the top team in the conference yet again, just ahead of Penn State and Minnesota.

Michigan came in fourth place, followed by Wisconsin, Ohio State, and Notre Dame. Basically, the loss to Cornell last year has no bearing on how Big Ten coaches feel about Michigan State hockey.
On top of that No. 1 spot in the preseason poll, Michigan State has a couple of preseason All-Big Ten first-teamers in Trey Augustine and Matt Basgall. I'm willing to bet we see more All-Big Ten-caliber Spartans throughout the season.
Hockey season is right around the corner with an exhibition against Windsor on Oct. 3 followed by a home series against New Hampshire six days later.
