It's been a great season for Michigan State hockey thus far, but the Spartans still have a long way to go if they want a chance to win the Big Ten for a second straight season.

Michigan State would have to survive some tough matchups, especially on the road, if it wants to take home a second straight conference title and make a push for the Frozen Four.

One of the toughest matchups this season took place on Friday night against No. 10 Michigan on the road and the game came down to the wire. The Spartans scored first and even took a 2-1 lead in the third period before Michigan tied things up and sent the game to overtime.

For a second straight weekend, the Spartans were going to have to prove themselves in the extra period in order to secure a conference win.

Unfortunately, the Spartans didn't have great luck in the extra frame.

A minute into overtime, Michigan scored the game-winning goal to topple the No. 1 team in the nation and make a statement in the Big Ten title race.

Unfortunately, Trey Augustine's return since winning gold with Team USA in World Juniors hasn't been perfect even though he's playing really good hockey. He let up the winning goal just a minute into overtime which stunned a lot of fans, but you expect great games like this in rivalry bouts.

Michigan State will get another shot at the Wolverines on Saturday night back in East Lansing as they'll get a chance to prove that they can bounce back from a heartbreaking loss.
