One of the biggest Michigan State hockey series of the season is taking place this weekend in Minneapolis and the Spartans got this quick two-game road series off on the right foot, beating the No. 1 team in the nation in overtime on Friday night.

Michigan State continues to impress despite a slight hiccup last weeked at Wisconsin. The Spartans split that series with the Badgers last weekend but they're looking to bounce right back.

And bounce back they did on Friday night as they fell behind 1-0 before scoring three goals in the second period against No. 1 Minnesota only to give up a 3-2 lead in the third period.

The game was tied 3-3 heading into overtime and it felt like the momentum was on the Golden Gophers' side even though Trey Augustine was playing one of his best games of the season, making some incredible stops throughout the game. He even stopped a couple of clear-path breakaway attempts by the Gophers late in the game that saved Michigan State.

Augustine's biggest plays were in the overtime period and the shootout. He blanked the Gophers in overtime and then held them scoreless in two shootout attempts while the Spartans made both of theirs.

This was one of the biggest wins of the season for Michigan State and if the Spartans can somehow come out on top on Saturday night, we could be looking at the No. 1 team in the nation residing in East Lansing once again.

Even with a loss on Saturday, Michigan State has made a statement.
