Four games into the 2025 season, Michigan State football coaches have a good grasp of the offense.
The Spartans have a strong passing game, led by a much-improved Aidan Chiles, and a run game that has a pulse with Makhi Frazier and Brandon Tullis leading the way.
The offensive line could use some help, and the injuries to Luka Vincic and Stanton Ramil don’t help, but there’s potential up front. The tight end group is also solid with Jack Velling and Michael Masunas leading the way.
And on Monday, Jonathan Smith spoke to the media and revealed which freshmen he plans on burning redshirts for. He mentioned Aydan West, Jack Wills, and Jayden Savoury, and said that Derrick Simmons is a possibility, too. One name that came into the 2025 season as one of the top freshmen was Jace Clarizio.
Obviously, after not suiting up through four games, it’s clear that he’s going to redshirt although his name wasn’t brought up specifically.
It was on Tuesday by running backs coach Keith Bhonapha. He gave an update on the talented freshman back, which had to get fans excited about the future.
Keith Bhonapha: “Overall, Jace Clarizio is coming along great. He’s more of a scat-back, speedy guy.”

Clarizio is “coming along great” and he’s more of a speedy back. So that’s a great update on the freshman running back that we likely won’t see this season, although he will have four games to compete in and still retain that redshirt.
The East Lansing native is going to be the running back of the future, so it’s big for him to sit back and learn behind Frazier, Tullis, and Elijah Tau-Tolliver. He will be competing for a starting job in a year or two.
