Michigan State football has lost yet another receiver to the transfer portal.
This time, it comes in the form of a one-year transfer who played sparingly under Jonathan Smith in 2025 after coming over from Central Michigan.
Evan Boyd, a 6-foot-3 wideout from East Lansing, has hit the transfer portal after spending one season with the program that he grew up rooting for. He’s now back in the portal for a second straight year and he has two years of eligibility left.

Boyd had just three catches for 54 yards this season, and all of those came against Nebraska and Indiana. He had zero catches in the other 10 games.
This comes just one year after putting up 21 catches for 302 yards and two touchdowns as a freshman with Central Michigan. He decided to return home to play for the program that he grew up as a fan of and where his brother, Ethan, and parents went. His older brother decided to transfer away from Michigan State, too.
Michigan State is now down three receivers so far this offseason with Nick Marsh and Chrishon McCray also entering the portal.
That leaves the cupboard fairly bare for Courtney Hawkins and Pat Fitzgerald.
Courtney Hawkins needs to hit the portal hard
It’s a little surprising to see some projected starters like Marsh and McCray hit the transfer portal as well as a potential rotational piece like Boyd, especially with Hawkins returning as receivers coach. From all accounts, players love Hawkins, and he has a track record of getting guys to the NFL.
Now, he’s going to have to hit the portal hard for some replacements.
That shouldn’t be too difficult seeing as he’s one of the better receivers coaches in the country and Michigan State has a history of putting guys in the league at the position.
Plus, Jonathan Smith was able to land four solid wideouts this past offseason from the transfer portal, and his offenses were sketchy, putting it mildly.
Michigan State is going to have to live in the portal for the next couple of weeks when the window opens on Jan. 2. I have faith that they’ll land some talent.
