You would think Jonathan Smith and Michigan State football would take some time off right after spring ball, but the coaching staff has been working hard in the transfer portal.

While Michigan State has lost some talent to the portal like Jaylan Brown, Dillon Tatum, and James Schott, it has also gained some. On Tuesday, its transfer class grew by one again as the Spartans added a defensive end from Georgia State.

Former Miami edge rusher Cam Williams committed to Michigan State on Tuesday, according to Justin Thind of 247Sports. He reportedly also held offers from Purdue and Kansas.

This is a nice pickup for the Spartans because Williams comes with plenty of experience at the Group of Five level. He began his career at Troy for two years before heading to Jacksonville State in 2023. He recorded 17 tackles, two tackles for loss, and a sack there before hitting the portal once more.

At Georgia State in 2024, Williams recorded 21 total tackles, five tackles for loss, a sack, and a forced fumble and earned a few Power Four offers in the portal.

Unlike Tom Izzo, Jonathan Smith is taking a chance on a kid who has played at three different programs already and Michigan State will be his fourth home since 2020. He brings with him plenty of experience as well as 46 career tackles, nine tackles for loss, and two sacks.

Depth is a great thing to have.
