Michigan State football had a great day on Monday.
First, it announced the hiring of quarterbacks coach Jon Boyer from Oregon State and safeties coach James Adams from Wake Forest. Next, it landed former four-star linebacker and BYU linebacker transfer Aisea Moa. And lastly, it picked up another transfer commitment in the form of Idaho tight end Mason Mini.
Mini has become the 14th transfer commitment of the 2025 cycle for Jonathan Smith and Co.
The Idaho tight end didn't put up crazy numbers as a freshman with the Vandals, catching just five passes for 61 yards. He has three years of eligibility remaining and under the tutelage of Brian Wozniak, he's going to grow as both a pass-catcher and a blocker.
As Corey Robinson of 247Sports has stated, Mini's strength is blocking and that's what the staff prioritized at the position in the transfer portal.
With his 6-foot-5, 240-pound frame and athleticism, I think we could see Mini become more of a pass-catcher in East Lansing than he was at Idaho. He'll see the field plenty because of his ability to block which is what the staff saw and when he builds confidence, he'll be a valuable target for Aidan Chiles and whoever else starts under center for the next three years.
While this might not get touted as one of the better additions to the roster via the transfer portal, Mini is going to end up being one of those 'under the radar' additions when we look back on it.
Michigan State got better on offense, defense, and on its coaching staff on Monday.
