Another day, another defensive back transfer for Michigan State football.
The Spartans have now landed seven defensive back transfers this cycle to go along with three non-athlete designated (by 247Sports) defensive backs in the 2025 class. That's 10 new defensive backs joining the roster and it feels like there are more bodies than snaps to go around.
But Jonathan Smith is addressing a major weakness, especially after losing Demetrice Martin.
On Tuesday afternoon, Michigan State landed its seventh transfer defensive back in the form of Texas Tech safety Devynn Cromwell.

Cromwell played just one season with Texas Tech, reigning from Toronto, and appeared in nine games, recording 20 total tackles. He comes to Michigan State with an opportunity to crack that two-deep depth chart, but it feels like there is a lot of sorting out in the defensive backfield.
Despite losing Dillon Tatum earlier this spring, Michigan State has made sure that the defensive backfield isn't lacking depth. The Spartans have added Cromwell, Dontavius Nash, Tracy Revels, Anthony Pinnace III, Joshua Eaton, Malcolm Bell, and NiJhay Burt. That's a lot of transfer movement in the defensive backfield but Smith has focused on that area in the portal.
Cromwell is also the second Texas Tech transfer to join Michigan State in the past couple of weeks as edge rusher Isaac Smith committed not too long ago.
Thirteen of the 22 incoming transfers are on the defensive side of the ball and while offense should be a focus, the Spartans feel good with what they have on that side of the ball after adding a few talented wideouts and a running back in the portal.
Smith is quietly working the portal relentlessly.
