Just two days after committing to Michigan State football, Idaho tight end Mason Mini has flipped it commitment to an ACC program.
The Idaho tight end committed to Michigan State and it looked like Jonathan Smith and Co. would be getting a blocker at the position. But the staff will have to move forward with what they already have in the tight end room after Mini has announced that he will be attending Cal.
This is an odd move, especially since it was Mini's "agent" who broke the news and not the actual transfer himself, but that was a quick commitment. He was a Spartan for about 48 hours and now he'll be headed out west to play for Cal.
The tight end room should be just fine in East Lansing regardless. The Spartans return Jack Velling after a somewhat disappointing first season with Michigan State as well as Brennan Parachek (a former four-star recruit), Michael Masunas who was raved about last offseason before suffering a season-ending injury early in 2024, and Wyatt Hook who was a top recruit for Smith and Co. in 2024.
Michigan State also brings in Jayden Savoury in its 2025 recruiting class, hailing from Orchard Lake (Mich.) St. Mary's along with Bryson Williams and Charles White.
Smith may have lost a guy who could set the edge and help the Spartans block better in multiple situations but there's a lot of faith in guys like Parachek and Masunas behind Velling.
While this is a weird situation, it shouldn't hurt the Spartans too much.
