You know whenever you see Jonathan Smith showing emotion, something bad must’ve happened. Michigan State fell short in overtime, 23-20, after a disgusting ref show in overtime.

The Spartans out-scored Minnesota 17-0 through 28 minutes in the second half, but Minnesota scored the game-tying touchdown with 29 seconds left, giving the ball back to Michigan State with a chance to go down and kick the game-winning field goal.

Michigan State took it to overtime and got the ball first after losing the toss, kicking a field goal after one of the most horrendous referee mishaps that I’ve ever seen. They called a pass interference against Minnesota on a third-and-3 to give the Spartans a first-and-goal inside the 10. After PJ Fleck whined and the refs deliberated after the ball was spotted to account for the penalty, they came back and said that there was no flag on the play.

Smith and his staff were dumbfounded by the overturn because, well, you can’t overturn a penalty, especially since there was no replay for the refs to look at.

Michigan State settled for a field goal.

Then, when Minnesota had the ball, Michigan State was flagged for a questionable pass interference that probably could’ve been a no-call and then on third-and-goal, Drake Lindsey rushed for a touchdown, but the replay showed him out of bounds about an inch short of a touchdown.

It was reviewed and somehow upheld as the game-winning touchdown.

As you can imagine, fans are still shocked by the poor officiating to end the game. Here were some of the best social media reactions.

I could’ve shared about 100 more tweets about the poor calls, and even Michigan fans agreed that it was horrendous officiating. You know that’s when it’s bad.
