Michigan State fans might have a reporter to thank for two more years of Tom Izzo

Tom Izzo may have been joking around, but we’re taking his word for it.

Tom Izzo spoke a lot about his future following MIchigan State’s Round of 32 win over Louisville on Saturday afternoon, telling reporters that he’s not going anywhere.

Heck, he may have even added a couple of years onto his coaching career.

And Michigan State fans can thank the media for that. No, that’s not a typo.

A reporter asked a question about how he gets each year’s Michigan State team to play the exact same way. The reporter’s question was met with a fairly surprising answer.

Michigan State fans are going to need to know who that reporter is so they can send him a fruit basket to thank him for prolonging Izzo’s coaching career by a couple of years.

While he was just joking, Izzo did allude to the fact that he’s not going anywhere after answering a question about sticking around when the going got tough and fellow coaching legends retired. He said that he’s going to be a steward of the game and he has no plans to go anywhere.

Every time Izzo talks about coaching, he gushes over the joys that come from it like after the win on Saturday when he got to celebrate a special moment with his players and family.

Tom Izzo doesn’t sound ready to retire

Listening to Izzo speak about his future, it just sounds like he’s had a second wind and he doesn’t sound anywhere near retirement despite being 71 years of age.

Izzo is always joking about retiring and then he says that he’s not going anywhere — coaches who are on the verge of retirement don’t do that. After hearing him say that he’s stuck around to be a steward of the sport, I would be shocked to see the legend retire even within the next few years.

Michigan State fans are simply not going to complain about more Izzo. With how well he’s coaching lately, he is going to be able to stick around for as long as his heart desires.

Winning 57 games over the past two seasons with back-to-back Sweet 16 appearances while bringing in a top-five recruiting class will make any coach want to stick around.
