Michigan State fans aren’t buying the ironic reason for Dusty May’s departure

Yeah, there’s no way Dusty May left because of this.

Anyone who logged onto social media on Monday got a healthy dose of Dusty May news whether they wanted to or not. Michigan State fans, in particular, got their fair share of jabs in on the coaching change and while Michigan has bragging rights because of that national title, Spartan fans feel vindicated after calling Dusty out for months.

Michigan State fans had been all-in on the rumored tampering that May partook in and they were ready for the rival coach to be exposed.

There were some credible accusations against Dusty about reaching out to several Big Ten players when he wasn’t supposed to and Spartan fans are now accusing him of “buying” a national title.

It’s a pretty fair accusation considering Michigan was rumored to have one of the most expensive rosters in the country last season with three lottery picks leading the way. It turns out they were just one-year rentals and Dusty was apparently a two-year rental. All of that resulted in a national title which is just proof that you don’t have to be fully invested into a program to win it all.

Many fans were critical of the alleged unethical way that May built his 2025-26 Michigan roster and he’s apparently turning right back around and giving the excuse of the poor state of college athletics as the reason he’s leaving. He’s allegedly one of the very reasons that college athletics are in a bad spot.

Dusty had been known for paying players big money to play for Michigan and apparently a situation popped up of him landing a top transfer commit but his agent was an issue and the commitment never stuck. This sounds like the Juke Harris recruitment and it felt pretty obvious that the new Tennessee guard was looking for a bag.

Tennessee likely offered more at the last second. Dusty got a taste of his own medicine.

And he didn’t like it.

Dusty May isn’t telling the whole truth

The now-departed Michigan head coach is letting fans off easy by saying he’s leaving because college athletics are in a bad spot and there doesn’t seem to be a fix in the near future.

He didn’t like someone doing to him what he had been allegedly doing to others.

Seems pretty hypocritical, especially if the rumors of Dusty tampering and paying big money for players is true. It’s ironic that he’s allegedly leaving college basketball for the NBA because of tampering and because the state of college basketball is not great.
