There was a special visitor in East Lansing on Sunday afternoon as Michigan State basketball held on for a tight win over Ohio State.

Tom Izzo and the Spartans hosted one of the best overall prospects in the 2027 recruiting class who took an unofficial visit for the Ohio State game. Unfortunately, he was treated to one of Michigan State’s worst games of the season, but at least it was a win.

Four-star point guard Jaxson Davis, the No. 1 recruit in Illinois, was in East Lansing on Sunday afternoon for a visit, according to Justin Thind of 247Sports.

Davis got to watch some elite point guard play in person, although it was shining more on Ohio State’s side as Bruce Thornton had 32 points against the Spartans. Jeremy Fears is a likely All-American this season and he had 11 points and eight assists which is considered a “down” game for him. He still played well enough down the stretch to lead the Spartans to a clutch come-from-behind win.

Having Davis on campus was big for Izzo because he has to identify his point guard in the 2027 class, and the four-star from Illinois might just be the top target.

Jaxson Davis could be next in line

If Davis does end up being Michigan State’s 2027 point guard commit, he would join an incredible lineage that started with Magic Johnson and saw guys like Scott Skiles, Mateen Cleaves, Eric Snow, Drew Neitzel, Kalin Lucas, Travis Trice, Denzel Valentine, Cassius Winston, and Jeremy Fears lead their respective teams into battle.

Michigan State has gotten some elite play from the position, and that doesn’t look to be ending any time soon.

Why not? Because after Fears graduates, Michigan State will have Carlos Medlock Jr. who is one of the biggest risers in the 2026 class. It’s clear that Izzo is aiming high for Medlock’s eventual replacement. Getting Davis to back up Medlock once Fears leaves would be huge.

Izzo doesn’t usually get these recruits on campus unless he feels like he has a legitimate shot to land them. I could see Davis — the nation’s No. 40 recruit — being next in line after Fears and Medlock.

Let’s hope Davis didn’t put too much stock into the clunker of a game he watched.
