There was no sweeter sound on Friday night than the final buzzer that signified the end of the Michigan vs. Michigan State basketball game in Ann Arbor and, subsequently, a Spartan win.
With the win, Michigan State moved into sole possession of first place in the Big Ten standings, moving just 0.5 games ahead of the Wolverines. It was one of the gutsiest wins in recent memory for Michigan State as it didn't back down from the No. 12 Wolverines who had been one of the hottest teams in the country.
Michigan State raced out to a 16-8 lead and then surrendered an 18-2 run which is was considered a "killshot" according to Evan Miyakawa, a respected analytics expert. The Spartans survived that huge run and pulled within four by halftime and then took the lead in the second half, eventually winning by 13.
This was Michigan State's second ranked win of the week, ensuring a rise from No. 14 in the AP Top 25 on Monday.
And, of course, that happened. I expected a jump to No. 10 or No. 9, at best, but Michigan State had the biggest rise of any team in college basketball, vaulting to No. 8.

The two wins for Michigan State launched it six spots to No. 8 and another couple of wins this week over Maryland and Wisconsin would ensure the Spartans flirt with the top five. We could be talking about a potential No. 1 seed in the NCAA Tournament if Michigan State wins another two this week.
Here's to another strong week and, hopefully, a 4-0 finish to the season.
