With all the talk of a potential fifth year for Carson Cooper, Jaxon Kohler was overlooked maybe a little too much. He could have opted to come back for a fifth year, too, and I think he would actually have a case without the new five-year window ruling.
Kohler missed about half the season two years ago and had to battle an injury just to get back into the playing rotation. That missed time could be utilized in a waiver for a fifth year.
Michigan State did land its center in 7-foot-2 Charlotte big man Anton Bonke, so why not entertain the idea of Kohler returning for a fifth year at power forward with him rotating with Cam Ward. It would make sense, but it was never really talked about — I’m talking about it now obviously.
Unfortunately, that newfound dream of a Kohler return to complement Bonke and give Michigan State’s starting lineup five guys who could step out and hit the three is probably dead.
On Tuesday, Kohler posted what’s essentially a farewell video to Spartan fans captioned “PSYC#0ut”.

Losing Kohler is definitely going to hurt, but this one has been much more prepared for than the Cooper departure. Fans are still holding out hope that Cooper might come back because he said he wouldn’t shut down the idea a few weeks ago, but Kohler was never really expected to be an option because it felt like he was ready to move on.
If he did get an opportunity to return for a fifth year and he took it, I think every Spartan fan in existence would be jumping for joy. Unfortunately, that looks like it has about a zero percent chance of happening.
Why do I say zero percent chance? Because his dad, Jeff Kohler, essentially hinted at that, thanking fans for giving him and his son four great years.
Psycho out.
Michigan State could have used another year of Jaxon Kohler
I never truly understood why there was all the lobbying for another year of Cooper but no one felt the need to talk about one more season for Kohler.
Kohler was a fantastic power forward during his senior season, and if not for a rough patch in the middle of Big Ten play, he could have had one of the more historic shooting seasons for a big man in Michigan State history. Kohler went from not making a single three through 55 games in his first two years to shooting 39 percent from deep as a senior. Unreal development.
I would take a power forward who averages 12.5 points and 8.9 rebounds back in a heartbeat. Those are the kind of numbers that national champion power forwards put up. And they’d only improve during his senior year.
Imagining a post of Kohler and Bonke is actually bittersweet because I know there’s no chance that it happens, but it would make for one of the best frontcourts in America. Then the Spartans would have Jesse McCulloch, Kaleb Glenn, Ethan Taylor, Julius Avent, and Cam Ward coming off the bench to spell the starters. There would be no shortage of fresh frontcourt legs in East Lansing.
And no shortage of shooting.
Kohler, Bonke, Coen Carr, Jordan Scott, and Jeremy Fears Jr. are all capable shooters with a couple of those guys needing one more year of improvement. That lineup would be a nightmare for defenses because no one could be left open on the perimeter.
I guess we’ll have to leave Kohler‘s return in the “what if” category that Michigan State fans are constantly haunted by.
