When Michigan State’s season ended, it was pretty clear what the biggest needs on the roster were.
Tom Izzo was going to have a huge hole at the center position and he needed to address it in the transfer portal despite landing four-star center Ethan Taylor who was the No. 2 center in the 2026 class at one point in time. He was able to address that in the portal with Anton Bonke and he’s hoping for a breakout sophomore year from Jesse McCulloch.
The other clear need was at the two-guard spot.
While Jordan Scott looked like he could fill that void, he comes off as more of a small forward, in my opinion, and with him adding muscle this offseason, I believe that to be true even more. He could be the backup to Coen Carr at the three and still find a way to play 20ish minutes per game on the wing.
The two-guard spot will be occupied by Scott still probably, but Jasiah Jervis is the brand-new toy that the fanbase is excited to see Izzo use. Kur Teng is returning and could be the starter as well, but I believe the potential at the two is higher with Jervis.
And at Moneyball this week, he’s shown flashes of what he could do at Michigan State’s starting shooting guard spot.
Jasiah Jervis has been putting on a show at Moneyball
After a breakout performance in the first night of Moneyball with scoring at every level and a surprising slashing ability that many fans weren’t familiar with.
Jervis looked really good in the first game on Tuesday and all he did was follow that up with a near-50-point performance on Thursday, scoring 44 to lead everyone. Once again, he showed that he could very well be the Spartans’ starting two-guard.
Tom Izzo is no stranger to starting freshmen if he believes that they provide an immediate upgrade and I think Jervis does just that at an important position.
Michigan State was lacking a go-to scorer outside of Jeremy Fears last season and if Jervis can be that in year one while sharing a backcourt with the All-American, Michigan State is going to be in that national title conversation in April.
Jervis did say that he was looking forward to winning a national title.
