After missing an NBA Summer League showdown with Frankie Fidler and the Portland Trail Blazers earlier this week, Jase Richardson was back in action on Wednesday.

And he didn’t disappoint.

Richardson has been playing well in the Summer League thus far, but he looked like the best player on the floor against the Philadelphia 76ers on Wednesday. In a game that featured several former first-round picks, including Labaron Philon Jr. of the 76ers, Richardson stood out and looked like someone who could give the Orlando Magic 25-plus good minutes on any given night.

The former Michigan State star led all Magic players with 30 minutes played in the 99-92 win over the 76ers, and he led all scorers with 25 points. He also had a game-high three steals and 10 field goals made.

The second-year Spartan in the NBA had himself a breakout performance, dropping 25 points with four assists, three steals, and three made 3-pointers on five attempts. He was also 10-for-15 from the floor and was tied for second among all players with a +/- of +15.

He looked really good.

Richardson’s performance isn’t even a surprise. He has looked pretty good in Summer League action thus far and although he missed Orlando’s last game, he continues to be the most consistent player on the roster. He’s helped lead the Magic to a 3-1 record but they get the next two days off before the Summer League semifinals.

I think I speak for all Spartan and Magic fans when I say that I would like to see much more of Richardson this upcoming season. He’s proving that he belongs.

Jase Richardson deserves a much larger role in 2026-27

Although he’s not the biggest guy on the floor and that was one of the biggest knocks against him when he was drafted in the first round last year, Richardson was effective in limited minutes as a rookie.

Richardson averaged 10.9 minutes over 54 games and put up 4.4 points and 1.1 assists while shooting over 47 percent from the floor and over 35 percent from three. He was in more of a learning role as a rookie for the Magic who made the NBA Playoffs before getting eliminated by the Detroit Pistons, but now that he’s matured and learned the ropes, he’s ready.

I’m not lobbying for 40 minutes a game, but if he’s not playing at least 20-25, I think the Magic are misusing him. He’s always making good plays when he’s on the floor and that high-IQ play comes from his days as a Spartan under Tom Izzo.

I see a major second-year leap coming for the former Michigan State sensation who spent just one season in East Lansing because he was that good.

If I’m going to make a prediction on his 2026-27 stats, I’ll go with 21 minutes per game, averaging 10.2 points, 3.4 assists, and 1.2 steals while shooting around 40 percent from three and 45 percent from the floor. The former Michigan State star is crafty and athletic and he’s becoming even tougher to guard this year.

Orlando will witness a Richardson breakout in 2026-27.
