Jase Richardson admits that he thinks about his life if he had stayed at Michigan State

Many former Spartans and former Michigan State recruiting targets are finding out the hard way this offseason after entering the transfer portal that Tom Izzo is usually right. He’s also right when it comes to advising guys to enter the NBA draft — Jase Richardson can attest to this.

Izzo could have landed guys like Darius Adams or Aiden Sherrell or Jalen Haralson in the first place and there’s a good chance that they’re not in the transfer portal — or at new programs — right now. He also could have retained a guy like Tre Holloman and we might be talking about how Izzo can get back to a second straight Final Four in 2026-27.

I truly believe that the 2025-26 team was one shooting guard away from being a national title favorite, and sometimes that’s all it takes. Being one player short can ruin a title push.

Unfortunately, the Spartans may experience that again this year.

We’re not going to get into that, though. Another former Spartan star who left the program with eligibility remaining last offseason did touch on the fact that he misses Michigan State and he “definitely” thinks about what his life would be like if he had returned for his sophomore year.

Jase Richardson is truly like all of us.

Richardson admitted that he watches every game and that he thinks about what the team could have done if he was still in East Lansing. You can tell that he misses playing with his Spartan teammates and he would have loved another run in year two, but he did say that he felt the right choice was made.

Still, thinking about Richardson as the two-guard in last year’s lineup with Jordan Scott and Kur Teng coming off the bench is just going to make all of us sad. Jeremy Fears Jr. and Richardson would have combined to create the best backcourt in the country.

What could have been.

Jase Richardson has another chance to make MSU fans sad

While we’re all still recovering from hearing that Jase has thought long and hard about what his life would have been like if he came back for a sophomore season, he’s busy preparing for Game 2 of the NBA Playoffs against the Detroit Pistons.

For a second time in as many springs, he could rip the hearts out of Michigan State fans everywhere.

Although Richardson isn’t seeing the floor much for the Magic, he could play a scout team role in helping Orlando advance past the top-seeded Pistons. Seeing as a majority of Michigan State fans and alumni are also Pistons fans, Richardson could really break some hearts again.

Orlando took Game 1 in Detroit in shocking fashion and Game 2 is on Wednesday night.
