It’s a big day in the recruitment of Alabama transfer Aiden Sherrell, and that doesn’t mean that I have Michigan State on commit watch. Actually, he might be on commit watch for another Big Ten program, and if that doesn’t happen today, that’s a win for Tom Izzo and Michigan State.
The Spartans and Indiana Hoosiers seem to be battling it out for Sherrell and Duke is hovering around, too, which I don’t love to see, but the recruitment is heating up.
This past weekend, Sherrell was at Indiana visiting the Hoosiers and many believed that head coach Darian DeVries was going to push for a commitment before he left campus, but we’re sitting here on Monday afternoon and that still hasn’t happened yet.
The current word is that he’s leaving Bloomington on Monday afternoon, and if he remains uncommitted, I think that has to make Michigan State the frontrunner.
Leaving arguably the biggest competitor without committing would be a massive development for Izzo and the Spartans because they can then get him to campus for a visit and push for a commitment then. If he’s able to make it to East Lansing for a visit, I would have to think that Michigan State would be on commit watch during his trip.
That’s a big if right now, however. He needs to leave Indiana without committing.
I just know they’re giving him a blank check. Rumors are saying that Izzo isn’t giving up.
Aiden Sherrell is the perfect Tom Izzo big
Even before he hit the transfer portal, I looked at Sherrell as the ideal big man addition to the roster, especially since he was recruited heavily by Izzo back in the 2024 class.
Sherrell fits that Michigan State mold which is why the Spartans were one of the finalists for him before he chose Alabama and they’re hoping to not miss out on him for a second time in three years. He’s a big-bodied big man who can block shots, rebound, shoot threes, score efficiently around the rim, and he’d be a perfect pick-and-roll guy for Jeremy Fears Jr.
We’ll find out if Izzo is going to have a real shot to land Sherrell at some point on Monday. I’d bet that if he leaves Bloomington uncommitted, he’ll schedule a Michigan State visit.
Michigan State is an elite center away from being a legit national title favorite, and Sherrell fits that description. Plus, he has starting experience at another high-major program. Fans who are worried about another Szymon Zapala-type safe addition would love this get.
It’s a big day to be paying attention to social media. No Indiana commitment would be huge.
