With the transfer portal for basketball already open while teams are still playing in the NCAA Tournament (crazy), some news regarding now-former Iowa player Josh Dix should be catching the eye of Michigan State basketball fans.
Michigan State may be among the potential suitors for the guard. Dix is one of many Iowa Hawkeyes who entered the transfer portal after Fran McCaffrey's firing.
Ironically, Tom Izzo stood up for Fran less than a week before he was fired.
In doing so Izzo talked about how the Hawkeyes don't have the resources to keep players in this NIL and transfer portal era. I'm not saying that was a possible hint that Izzo could be interested in one of the former Iowa players.
Rob Reinhart from The Herald reported that Dix had entered the portal and that he had already heard from some big-name programs, including Michigan State, Alabama, and Auburn.
Careful, though, because Reinhart may be a troll and an attempt to find his author page was unsuccessful. So while he may have caught the attention of some other Michigan State reporters, this is likely a fake report, but it does conjure up some interest from Spartan fans.
Maybe Michigan State should target Dix.

I’m told he’s already heard from the following teams:
- Auburn
- Alabama
- Providence
- Michigan State
- Louisville
He’s currently ranked as the #1 portal prospect. pic.twitter.com/1MrpOEbntL
So, is it believable that the Spartans could be pursuing Dix? Sure, it's too early to say who will be on the roster next season, especially with Jase Richardson having a decision to make and Jaden Akins graduating. But adding an experienced guard from the portal would be a good move.
Dix has played three seasons for the Hawkeyes, and this season he started all 32 games. Not to mention, he showcased his scoring ability this season, averaging 14.4 points per game. Not to mention he's a 3-point sharpshooter. With a career percentage above 40 percent from deep.
Shooting hasn't been the best for Michigan State this year, but looking forward to the future, Dix could give this team a big threat from deep.
I'm not predicting he will land in East Lansing, but it would be an interesting option to entertain.
In this era, you have to always be looking forward, but for now, the Spartans have to focus on the now, and with them in the Sweet 16, they still have plenty to play for ahead of them. It'd still be reassuring to hear the Spartans are at least exploring the portal.
