It’s been a busy week for transfer portal announcements, and it’s really hard to keep up with all of the names from hundreds of college basketball teams that have decided to enter. Michigan State fans have been keeping up with some of the names, but one has stood out above the rest.
Unfortunately, that one will be pursued by just about anyone in the Big 12, Big Ten, SEC, Big East, and ACC who needs a center.
Georgia big man Somto Cyril announced on Tuesday that he’d be transferring from Georgia after two seasons in Athens. The former four-star recruit was on the SEC All-Defensive team this year, averaging 2.2 blocks per game. That alone should tell you that he’d be a great fit in East Lansing. A defensive-minded center who can protect the rim at an elite level, rebound, and score with efficiency on offense? That’s right up Tom Izzo’s alley.
That’s a name that fans are hoping Michigan State gets involved with because he would immediately raise the floor and the ceiling and adding him to the starting lineup would make Michigan State a top three national title favorite, in my opinion.
Who knows if Michigan State will get involved, but he is a player that has been on a prominent Spartan’s radar. That Spartan is Draymond Green and he’s close with Izzo and they talk regularly. Maybe Draymond saw his name hit the portal and got into Izzo’s ear right away.
Earlier this year, Draymond watched Cyril play and raved about the talented center.

Draymond believes that Cyril could be a very valuable NBA player if he “gets the right staff” and I know a certain staff that Green would trust with his development. Obviously Draymond is alluding to the right NBA staff, too, but
Get it done, Draymond.
Michigan State is an elite center away from title No. 2
There’s no such thing as a “sure thing” in terms of college basketball contention these days (just ask Duke), but if Izzo can land an elite center from the portal who fits his style of play, I think Michigan State is a top three team in the country next year.
Right now, Michigan State is probably a top 10 team with Elite Eight or Final Four potential next year, but adding a guy like Cyril would immediately make the Spartans a favorite.
Cyril is going to have dozens of programs reaching out, but if Izzo can use Draymond to his advantage, he could get the Georgia big man to campus and from there, it’s a pretty strong sell. Not many top priority targets visit East Lansing and commit elsewhere.
Will MSU actually act on this? Who knows, but we can dream, and Draymond’s love for Cyril’s game could at least alert Izzo and his staff.
