Another cycle, another couple of transfers for Tom Izzo and Michigan State basketball.
For a second straight year, Izzo has gone into the portal, landing multiple players. A year ago, it was Frankie Fidler and Szymon Zapala and this year, it's been Kaleb Glenn and Trey Fort. And there's a good chance that Izzo isn't done in the portal unless he can land five-star combo guard Darius Adams who recently decommitted from UConn.
Michigan State has also lost multiple players to the transfer portal for a second straight year. Last year, it was AJ Hoggard and Mady Sissoko looking for greener pastures and this time around, it was Tre Holloman in a shocking move along with Xavier Booker and Gehrig Normand.
Both incoming transfers finished ranked inside 247Sports' final top 100 as the portal window officially closed this week.
So this got me thinking, how does that compare to previous Michigan State transfers?
Here are the official rankings of Michigan State's two incoming guys:
Kaleb Glenn: No. 83
Trey Fort: No. 85
Here are the rankings of the departing transfers:
Tre Holloman: 113
Xavier Booker: 185
Gehrig Normand: NR
But how about previous cycles? I went back and checked to see where the previous incoming Spartan transfers were ranked to give Glenn and Fort a point of reference.
Frankie Fidler (2024): No. 85
Zymon Zapala (2024): NR
The rankings stop in 2022 but I would assume Tyson Walker would have been in that top-50 range and Joey Hauser would have been a top-100 guy. But every year since the portal opened, it's usually guys in the 50-100 or even 100-200 range that seem to break out while the ones who are being paid the most in the top-10 usually fizzle out -- this past year was a prime example.
Oumar Ball (Indiana), Johnell Davis (Arkansas), AJ Storr (Kansas), Norchad Omier (Baylor), Kobe Johnson (UCLA), and Cliff Omoruyi (Alabama) all seemed to fizzle out despite being the biggest names in the portal in 2024.
I like where Michigan State stands with its incoming guys. Both should be more impactful than Fidler was last season.
