It’s time to make some changes.

Wednesday was the exact opposite of a banner day for Michigan State University.

Positive hoops news aside, Michigan State alumni were embarrassed — once again — by the university’s ever-disappointing Board of Trustees.

After a couple of years in East Lansing, MSU President Kevin Guskiewicz accepted the same exact job at Clemson, even taking a pay cut to do so. The move didn’t seem to make a ton of sense, especially since the Board of Trustees just voted to double his salary last week, but when he released a statement regarding his decision, it all made sense.

Guskiewicz said that leading Michigan State was one of the greatest honors of his life and he loved being in East Lansing and interacting with Spartans every day, but the Board of Trustees’ infighting, corruption, and undermining made his job almost impossible.

He said that the BoT was more focused on the past instead of helping the university move forward toward future goals. The move was shocking, but no one could blame Guskiewicz.

Michigan State’s now-former president isn’t the only prominent voice to speak up bluntly and honestly about the situation. Governor Gretchen Whitmer released a statement after Guskiewicz left for Clemson, stating that “nobody should be surprised by this outcome given some of the antics we’ve seen from a handful of board members”.

The Michigan State alum did not hold back.

Whitmer is a Spartan so she knows exactly how the rest of us feel, and it’s time for her to act on this situation rather than “watching closely” like she said she would do.

It’s time for a change.

Michigan State fans and alumni are done being embarrassed

Monitoring this situation does nothing if all the board members keep their jobs and no one is punished for the lies, corruption, deceipt, and constant undermining to push personal agendas. Whitmer has the power to remove board members if they’re not fulfilling their duties despite being elected officials and I think it’s time she wields it.

It’s good to see that she’s noticed the issues within the Board of Trustees, but she’s already denied previous requests to replace some of them.

I think this is strike three, and several board members should be feeling their seats starting to heat up. Whitmer would win a lot of people over if she were to wipe the MSU Board of Trustees clean and start completely fresh. That won’t happen, but even replacing 2-3 members who have been guilty of corruption and pushing personal agendas would get her in the good graces of Spartan alumni.

Make it happen, Governor Whitmer.
