A couple of former Michigan State teammates are now reuniting in the NBA Summer League, but not as players.

Joey Hauser and Foster Loyer have been named assistant coaches for the Brooklyn Nets during Summer League ball which began on July 4. Unfortunately, their first game coaching together resulted in a 79-76 loss to the Sacramento Kings after racing out to an early 11-point lead in the first quarter.

They’re coaching several Big Ten players including UCLA’s Tyler Bilodeau, who scored 22 points in a 23-point loss to the Spartans in East Lansing this past season, as well as Illinois’ Ben Humrichous and Michigan’s Danny Wolfe.

Loyer and Hauser have been working together in Brooklyn since the start of the 2025-26 season after the latter was hired as a video assistant. Loyer, on the other hand, has been with the Nets since 2023 as a video assistant as well, but was just hired as head video coordinator last year.

This is the first time that they’re officially assistant coaches together, though.

To recap, Loyer and Hauser were teammates at Michigan State in 2020-21 and then reunited as video coordinators for the Brooklyn Nets in 2025 and now they’re on the same coaching staff together for the NBA Summer League. These two just can’t stay away from each other.

Foster Loyer, Joey Hauser had very different MSU experiences

The last time that Loyer and Hauser were on the same team was all the way back in 2020-21 which was the latter’s first official season with Michigan State after sitting in 2019-20 as a transfer from Marquette. Loyer spent that final season in East Lansing as the backup point guard to AJ Hoggard before transferring to Davidson.

Loyer started seven games during that season while Hauser started 16. They went their separate ways when Loyer realized that he probably wasn’t going to be Michigan State’s starting point guard at any point and Davidson offered him that role and he excelled.

Loyer averaged no more than 4.2 points and 2.3 assists in three seasons at Michigan State before breaking out for a 16.2 points per game average in two years at Davidson. He also averaged 3.3 and 4.5 assists per game in his two seasons with the Wildcats.

Hauser, on the other hand, transferred to Michigan State from Marquette and really struggled with his confidence through his first two seasons in East Lansing. His third year, however, he broke out. In that final season with the Spartans, Hauser averaged 14.4 points and 7.0 rebounds while shooting over 46 percent from three.

They also faced each other in the 2022 NCAA Tournament where Hauser got the better of Loyer, scoring 27 points in a 74-73 first-round win where Loyer scored 12 on 3-of-9 shooting.

Both spent three seasons in East Lansing but it’s safe to say that Hauser had a much better experience with Michigan State.
