College basketball has been a breeding ground for unethical hoops since the NIL and transfer portal era got turned up a couple of notches and Michigan State head coach Tom Izzo has been sick about it.
The Hall of Famer has been outspoken about the negative direction that college basketball is headed and he’s called out his coaching counterparts who’ve fed into the nonsense.
The NCAA has been kind of a mess for the past couple of years — actually longer — and it’s not getting cleaned up any time soon. Especially when Will Wade is around.
LSU’s new head coach who was NC State’s coach for a season before leaving the Wolfpack high-and-dry and failing to uphold a promise made to former Spartan point guard Tre Holloman. Wade is a snake-oil salesman to the highest degree and he’s getting away with putting together the most unethical college basketball team maybe ever. And a former Spartan is part of that problem.
While Divine Ugochukwu didn’t do anything wrong but accept a larger paycheck with a bigger role at a Power Four program, he’s joining the most unethical team in NCAA history.
Don’t believe me? Just check out who the Tigers have landed this offseason under Wade:
Will Wade and LSU are building the most unorthodox college basketball roster of all-time.

That list of players doesn’t even include former Cleveland Cavalier Saliou Niang who went No. 58 overall in last year’s NBA draft. With the addition of Niang, the Tigers now have five guys who have either played professional basketball in the United States or overseas. If I’m the NCAA, I’m stepping in and vetoing this before it gets out of hand.
LSU is legitimately building a pro team in college and while I have a good feeling that it’s just going to be a fringe tourney team, it’s still bad for the sport.
Will Wade is setting a harmful NCAA precedent
This sets a horrendous precedent for guys who were drafted and played in the G-League without seeing any NBA action. Heck, it’s only a matter of time before Wade reaches out to a guy like Hunter Dickinson to really force the NCAA’s hand. Until the NCAA does something, however, Wade is going to keep getting away with it.
You’re telling me that the head coach who was caught on an FBI wiretap in 2017 illegally extending a “strong a** offer” to a top recruit via controversial middleman Christian Dawkins is not a good guy? Shocker.
Teams have already gone out and secured commitments from pro players like Baylor and Louisville but college basketball’s top coaches have all spoken out against it.
With Wade going rogue and pretty much building a team of professional basketball players, there needs to be some sort of penalty or the NCAA needs to at least rule the players who were drafted or played in the G-League ineligible.
Ugochukwu probably thought that he was going to be ‘the guy’ at guard for LSU next season when he joined an empty roster in Baton Rouge, but now in true Wade fashion, his “promised” role has diminished a bit.
Lesson learned: never trust Will Wade.
