Jonathan Smith and Michigan State football are preparing for what’s easily their biggest game of the 2025 season. The Spartans are trending in the wrong direction and Smith is on the hot seat, but everyone knows that a win over Michigan could salvage the season and save the second-year coach’s job.

One good thing that Smith has done this season has been bring some former players and coaches in to talk to the team about the importance of the rivalry. That can only help matters.

And if there’s one thing we all know: former Michigan State players absolutely hate Michigan, and that hatred is obvious when you talk to them about the rivalry.

Former Michigan State players were asked to describe Michigan in one word, and their responses were incredible. Fans have to love what some of their former favorites had to say about that school down the road.

Below is a threat created by MSU Content on X, showing former Michigan State players’ responses to the “describe Michigan in one word” prompt.

It’s clear that hatred is ingrained in these former Michigan State stars. They don’t like Michigan, and Michigan doesn’t like them. A lot of them came to Michigan State without truly knowing how intense the rivalry is like Naquan Jones, Payton Thorne, Felton Davis III, Brian Lewerke, and Trae Waynes. Those guys all came from out of state, and embraced the rivalry. They’re exactly why the rivalry still burns with hatred.

And those guys are perfect examples of why the Spartans have had more success over the past two decades than they did from the 1970s until early 2000s.

Fans should love these responses because, well, the former players feel the same way that they do.
