Wednesday was a good day to be a Michigan State football fan.

No, I’m not talking about the scandal that’s currently rocking the Michigan program, but rather the hiring of former Big Ten champion and Michigan State linebacker Max Bullough as the team’s co-defensive coordinator along with Joe Rossi. He’ll also coach the linebackers, which is what he did at Notre Dame before getting poached by Pat Fitzgerald.

The news was met with plenty of celebration on social media as Spartan fans were thrilled to see a former team captain from the glory days of Mark Dantonio return to East Lansing — as a coach.

Everyone was seemingly thrilled to have Bullough back, especially some former players, including a number of his former Spartan teammates.

Former Michigan State football players approve of the hire

The news ignited social media even more than it already was with the Sherrone Moore news, but this was actually a positive development.

Former players came out in droves to show their approval of the hire and excitement for the future of Michigan State football now that one of their own is in charge of the defense.

Guys like Lawrence Thomas, Damion Terry, and Trae Waynes retweeted the news, showing that they support the decision to hire Bullough away from Notre Dame, and some other former Michigan State stars chimed in with some support and approval of their own.

There are probably plenty more that I’m missing, but the overwhelming opinion from former players is that Bullough is the right guy for the job and he’s going to bring back the toughness to that defense.

Also, you know it’s a good hire when every single Notre Dame reporter and fan is upset about the news and they all wished him well without any harsh words. It was actually refreshing to see a fanbase understand that a coach wanted to leave for his alma mater, and Bullough did a good enough job to garner a ton of praise from Notre Dame fans and alums.

Michigan State is going to have a defensive identity, and Bullough feels like the perfect guy to complement Rossi on that side of the ball.

Who knows, if all goes well, Bullough may replace Fitzgerald one day after a long, successful tenure.
