Saturday night was forgettable for everyone except those who wear maize and blue. The Michigan State football program seemed to hit rock-bottom once again, losing a fifth straight game overall, and a fourth straight against Michigan in this rivalry series.

The Spartans haven’t beaten Michigan since 2021, and they even brought back Kenneth Walker III and Connor Cook to bring some good vibes back to the rivalry from the good guys’ side.

Unfortunately, those former Spartan stars were not enough.

Michigan controlled the game from the get-go, forcing a fumble on the Spartans’ first drive, and then adding a touchdown before the end of the first quarter to make it 10-0 in the blink of an eye. Michigan State would score a touchdown to make it 10-7, but that was as close as it would get as the Wolverines extended that lead to 17 in the third quarter.

The effort was lifeless and hot-seat head coach Jonathan Smith was seen on the sidelines showing no emotion again with his arms crossed and a bewildered look on his face.

Former players had seen enough at that point. A handful of them took to social media on Saturday night to show their disgust for the current state of the program, demanding change.

When you lose the support of former players, you know you’re in a bad place, and that’s exactly where Smith finds himself after another lifeless effort in a home loss to Michigan.

This program is spiraling out of control, and it feels like only a coaching change can fix it.

We may soon be in “flight watch” mode.
