It's been an interesting week for Michigan State football.

It started with the hires of quarterbacks coach Jon Boyer from Oregon State and safeties coach James Adams from Wake Forest. Then, the Spartans landed BYU linebacker transfer Aisea Moa whose little brother also received an offer over the weekend while he was on a visit. Following all of that, the Spartans landed Idaho tight end transfer Mason Mini. Less than 48 hours later, Mini flipped his commitment to Cal. Weird.

Now, former Michigan State defensive end Avery Dunn who entered the transfer portal earlier this offseason has found a new home. The busy week of football program news continues.

Following a season in which he played just one game and was on the injury report essentially every single week, Dunn decided to spend his last year of eligibility elsewhere and left Jonathan Smith and the Michigan State football program. On Wednesday, he committed to Toledo.

Dunn actually becomes the second former Spartan to transfer to the MAC. This past weekend, former QB1 Noah Kim transferred from Coastal Carolina to Eastern Michigan.

The former three-star recruit from Ohio heads back home to finish his college career after appearing in 21 games as a Spartan and recording 41 total tackles, seven tackles for loss, three sacks, a pass breakup, and a fumble recovery. His best season was in 2022 when he broke out for 28 tackles, six tackles for loss, and three sacks.

Since then, however, he has struggled a bit and he couldn't stay healthy in 2024.

Fortunately, Michigan State has addressed the defensive line in the portal as well as the 2025 recruiting class and I doubt Jonathan Smith is done yet.
