It’s always nice to see former Michigan State basketball stars having success in the professional basketball ranks, no matter where they happen to be playing.

In the NBA, Spartans have earned several major accolades from Defensive Player of the Year to All-Star to world champion. If you play for Tom Izzo and Michigan State, you’re going to have a real chance to play on the biggest stages in the world and guys like Draymond Green, Jaren Jackson Jr., Miles Bridges, Xavier Tillman, and Max Christie, among others, could tell you that.

But not all post-Michigan State success is limited to the NBA.

Only a small fraction of NCAA stars end up making it in the NBA which is why a lot of post-Michigan State success comes overseas. We see players like Cassius Winston, Malik Hall, Denzel Valentine, and Travis Trice making names for themselves overseason, and some of those guys are even winning major awards in their respective pro leagues.

The focus today is Trice.

The former Michigan State point guard has really assimilated well overseas and he’s been putting up really solid numbers throughout his entire professional career. This week, he turned those impressive numbers in for a second MVP award in three years in the Baloncesto Superior Nacional — a first-tier league in Puerto Rico.

Trice won the MVP with Criollos de Caguas in 2023-24 after averaging 21.3 points, 7.7 assists, 3.6 rebounds, and he shot 44.3% from the floor and 35.7% from deep. He’s been almost automatic when it comes to the long ball and he’s one of the top passers and scorers in a league that also features former NBA big man Montrezl Harrell.

The former Michigan State PG1 followed that MVP performance up with an equally-impressive one in 2025-26, averaging 18.4 points, 10.1 assists, 3.3 rebounds, and he slashed 45/37/88.

Some other notable players to win MVP awards in their BSN recently are former NBA guards Emmanuel Mudiay (2025) and Brandon Knight (2023).

Trice also won an MVP back in 2022 in the Polish Basketball League, averaging 17.2 points, 7.4 assists, and 2.2 rebounds while shooting a wildly impressive 46.8% from deep. He’s been one of the best 3-point shooters overseas for quite some time now.

Three MVP awards in two different overseas leagues in the span of four years is just an insane accolade to add to an already-impressive basketball resume.

Travis Trice has found success wherever he’s been

Starting out with the Spartans, Trice was a role player through his first three seasons before taking over as the team’s starting point guard as a senior. There, he averaged 15.3 points and 5.1 assists while shooting 37 percent from deep.

That breakout year earned him a spot in the G-League for a year where he averaged 15.4 points and 5.7 assists with the Westchester Knicks. He averaged 21.1 points and 6.4 assists the following season with the same team but his size kept him away from NBA rosters.

He would then split time between the Wisconsin Herd and Austin Spurs in the 2018-19 season, averaging over 15 points with both squads but no NBA team wanted to take a chance on him. So he decided to head overseas where it took him a minute to get comfortable, but since that first MVP season in Poland, he’s been cooking.

Although he’s not going to get an NBA shot again, barring a miracle, he has to be considered one of the most successful Spartans to play overseas basketball of all time.

Trice also happens to be one of the most underrated Spartans ever.
