Saturday night’s Michigan vs. Michigan State football game had everyone in the state’s attention, and it drew a nice crowd at Spartan Stadium, even if most of them were unhappy for most of the night.

Jonathan Smith had to feel the pressure in a packed Spartan Stadium as he entered the game on the hot seat, and it didn’t cool off much. Actually, it heated up after the Spartans fell behind 10-0 in the first quarter, and then 24-7 in the third quarter. The game was out of hand early on.

Michigan State did pull within three at halftime, but those three points felt like about three touchdowns because Michigan was getting the ball after halftime.

With everything looking fairly grim on Saturday night, and Michigan State staring a fourth straight rivalry loss in the face, the “Fire Smith” chants began popping up throughout the stadium, starting with the student section.

After hearing all week about how the team was fired up for this “sucker” and they’re starting to learn more about this “thing” from former players and coaches, the Spartans came out flat and lifeless as the offense had no juice and the defense was fighting for its life from the get-go.

Smith has some major questions to answer after this game, especially if the score holds up and the Wolverines beat the Spartans for a fourth straight time.

Losing to UCLA in a lifeless effort is one thing, but not having a better offensive game plan against Michigan is another. These fans deserve better.
