Excitement is palpable after Michigan State shares first scrimmage clip

Michigan State fans like what they see… for the most part.

There are still about 4-5 months between the most excruciating stretch of the offseason (now) and the start of the 2026-27 Michigan State basketball season.

It’s a brutal time to be a Michigan State hoops fan because the season isn’t as far away as it seems, but there’s still an entire summer to get through as well as 1-2 months of what has been mediocre Spartan football for four years. Fortunately, Pat Fitzgerald has taken over and has brought some excitement back to the football program, but that doesn’t shorten the span from May/June until late October when the Spartans have Midnight Madness and their first exhibition games.

We do get a few-week taste of basketball with Moneyball taking place at the end of the month and into July. We’ll get a preview of a lot of newcomers during Moneyball.

But Spartan basketball treated us all to an 80-second clip of a summer scrimmage on Thursday afternoon with the entire roster on campus — and seemingly healthy.

Fans quickly took to social media, as you can imagine, and gave their quick takeaways from the short clip of a scrimmage from ā€œWeek 1ā€. The excitement among the fanbase after this video hit social media was palpable.

And I can see why that is.

Michigan State fans have plenty to be excited about

My main takeaway is that I didn’t see any walking boots (knock on wood). Everyone out there looked pretty healthy, and that includes FAU transfer Kaleb Glenn who missed the entire 2025-26 season with a leg injury. Not only did Glenn make an appearance, but he looked really good.

Not only did Glenn hit a three with a hand in his face at the end of the clip, but earlier in the video, he made a nice spin move toward the basket, finishing strong at the rim. He showed that he’s a shooter but he can also slash to the hoop and be an effective three-level scorer.

It was also good to see Jeremy Fears shooting with confidence, Jesse McCulloch had a nice post move on Ethan Taylor, Coen Carr created for himself, and Carlos Medlock Jr. looks like a walking bucket. This team is growing right before our eyes, and this is just the beginning.

Michigan State is still gelling so it’ll take time for the newcomers to get comfortable with the current roster and Tom Izzo’s system but I like what I see so far.
